Christmas Break

The weather here yesterday was disgusting. I honestly had no idea it could rain in freezing temperatures, but lo and behold yesterday we got freezing rain! I had a haircut scheduled over in St. Louis with Melissa's stylist, and wasn't about to miss it so I had my dad drive the treacherous roads for me. Hannah was in the backseat constantly telling us to turn around for the first half of the ride. But I got my haircut, and I love it! It's pretty much as short as I had it two summers ago, only a much better style than it was then. She did a dry cut, something I have never had done before but it's much better for curly hair, because she cut each curl individually. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow after I fix it myself and perhaps post it along with other family pics.
Needless to say, I have to admit that I didn't know cold could get quite so disgusting. Thank goodness I have boots because outside is as wet and slushy and disgusting as I've ever seen. Don't worry, this won't deter me from eventually moving to a place with four seasons. I still enjoy the cold my friends.
I finished the third Twilight book last night and started the fourth. And even more, I wonder, why are parents letting their girls read this crap?! It is not appropriate for 12 and 13 year olds, and yet that is the majority of the girls reading it. Edward Cullen is not real, and these books put guys up on a pedestal with expectations that can't be met- guys can't be perfect for us. Granted, they actually promote abstinence until marriage, but not without a lot of sensuality along the way, and self control definitely is not part of the equation. It just bothers me that young girls are reading that stuff. It bothers me that I'm reading that stuff, that I'm hopelessly addicted like everyone else. It's a bit different than the Harry Potter craze, I'll say. I'd let young kids reading HP before I'd let them touch Twilight. The two don't really even compare, which I find annoying because people told me that if I loved Harry Potter I'd love Twilight. And including the fantasy, it's true. I do love fantasy stories. But there's a lot of stuff in Twilight that's different than HP.
Another stupid tangent I didn't mean to go off on. Well, I should be going. We're going over to Stephen and Susie's today to see the St. Louis family, and will be back tonight for the Christmas Eve service and party. Happy Christmas Eve!

COLD
Get this- the temperature is in the single digits! Six degrees! It didn't get above 12 yesterday. Imagine going from 78 degree temperatures every day this past week, and walking outside in St. Louis to about 8 degrees. I literally had to catch my breath when it hit me. We had to go to Target and get me a hat and gloves and I borrowed Melissa's scarf. We don't keep those things handy in Florida. Today I'm going to get boots because, as stupid as this is, I don't really own any good shoes. All I ever wear at home is flip flops, and if it's cold I generally throw on jeans and a hoodie with tennis shoes.
I'm so glad to be here with family. On Wednesday we are heading over to my dad's brother's in St. Louis to have good family time with them. We don't usually see his family as much so that should be fun, and I think Christi and Doug might be there too and I haven't seen them in a couple of years.
Something really sad last night though. When Melissa was driving me over to Grandma and Grandpa's, we drove past the road where we used to turn to go to Aunt Georgia's (the one where we saw our first nun!) and for a split second I got excited thinking about going over and seeing Aunt Georgia and Uncle Dick. It was really weird, because it was only a second and then I remembered, and I was really sad. I knew it wasn't really reality to me yet. I know I'm going to miss Aunt Georgia this year. It may sound odd, but I haven't really had a chance to "miss" her because I only see her at Christmas and occasionally in the summer. If that makes any sense... I have missed her because I know she is gone, but nothing in Florida has changed.
Well, I should be going now. Hannah and I are going to go to Target (if she ever wakes up!) and look at boots. Tomorrow I'm getting my hair cut with Melissa's stylist, and I'm excited about that. Merry Christmas if I don't get back on here before then!

I leave for St. Louis on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it. I love flying during the Holidays. The hustle and bustle of people, excited to be seeing their family. Last year Allison and I flew up together, and we ended up talking to this guy (or rather he ended up talking to us) and he was on leave from the military and going to see his mom in St. Louis, but he talked our ear off. I think we just looked at each other the whole time laughing, because he reminded me of a hyper puppy or something. I think we heard from him about a hundred times that it was 35 degrees in St. Louis, and he also welcomed us to hell several times. I don't think he was a fan of the midwest. When we were sitting in the terminal waiting to board our plane in Jax, a really cute guy was there, and I bet Allison ten bucks that I would end up next to him on the plane. When we got on the plane, this other guy was next to Allison, and he offered to trade with me and sat in my spot so that Allison and I could sit together. Then who comes walking down the aisle to sit next to that guy, but the cute guy. I'd have won that bet! :) Good times, and I'm pretty sure the only person who just enjoyed that story was Allison.
Tatyana is getting married on Saturday. I'm so happy for her. It will be a Russian wedding, so it should be interesting. I'm pretty sure that me and my nursing friends will be the only Americans there. I have heard that they are very long. My friend Natalia told me that real Russian weddings last two days. Yikes, I'm glad this one won't be like that. I don't think I would ever want to go to a two-day wedding.
Oh, and I finally saw Twilight last week! Such a good movie, I would definitely recommend it. The acting is not superb, but the story is and Rob Pattinson most definitely is so go see it. But read the book first.

Another End
I haven't really done much of anything since the break started. I went shopping on Saturday, and hung out at Tricia and Alex's the past two nights. I get to go back to Monday night BSF tonight and I'm so excited!!! And the next three weeks will be full of resting, seeing family, eating, hopefully playing in the snow (I HOPE!) and just fellowshipping.
I leave Sunday for St. Louis. I'm hoping for some snow while I'm there. It is 72 degrees right now here, and while I can't complain since we have had our fair share of cold weather this fall (more than I ever can remember this time of year), I do wish it felt more like Christmastime. If I have never mentioned it before I'll mention it now: I love cold weather. I would take a 20 degree day over 90 degrees with 80% humidity any day (and believe me, that is our weather nine months out of the year). No joke, that kind of weather is miserable! At least you still have good hair when it's cold. Humidity kills the curls, folks. I'm pretty sure Callie will have some words for me on this one... :)
All righty, time for a cheesy paragraph to talk about my feelings. Thank you to any of you who have been there for me this semester- supported me, encouraged me, prayed for me, or just given me a hug when I need it. You don't know how much that has meant to me and sometimes it would give me what I needed to get through that day. You know who you are, because it is most of you who read this. :) Anyway, I'm looking forward to the break and I hope I will be able to update more often now.
Praise God for getting me through!!

School
Tonight is the Christmas dessert at church. I'm looking forward to it- a break from all the crap in life. At least a couple of hours to not think about stress. I wish finals didn't have to be so stressful- but I think I make them that way. I just can't wait to be able to relax and not think.
Not much news really, so I'll leave it at that. In one week I will be done.

Twilight, School, Shopping, and My Voice

I finished the first Twilight book last night. I have been wanting to read them for awhile now, because I was wondering what all the hype about them was (I mean, honestly, a girl falling in love with a vampire?) I thought they sounded pretty stupid but the previews for the movie caught my interest (and hello, Robert Pattinson!) so I decided to read them. And I can definitely see why so many girls, young and older, love them. In good ways and bad ways. The bad way? They are very sensual- a lot about their desire for each other (both sensual and... vampire desire you might call it?) and that sort of stuff. But in a good way, I think that Edward is the embodiment of what we all desire- he has the ability for much evil, yet he restrains it. He works hard and gives up his own comfort and safety to protect his woman, both from others and from himself. He holds back on what he really desires, and loves her instead. I haven't read the rest of the books so I don't know how they are, but I think in essence that's what really drew me in, and probably a lot of other girls as well. But, young girls should not be reading this stuff. No way would I let a girl younger than 16 read these, and I mean that. I'm interested to see the movie now, however, because it is a good story.
I finished my ATI remediation today and it took me more than three hours! I was about to go crazy by the end. It took three tries to make the 100% but I did it. So that is one less thing to think about while I study for finals.
I have enjoyed this break a lot. Today has been pretty productive, so I'm glad for that. We all went shopping at 3:45 am yesterday, and it was awesome! I was extremely tired by the end though after only getting an hour and a half of sleep (Twilight being the culprit for that). However, I think adrenaline pretty much got us all through the morning, and we ended it at Cracker Barrell for an awesome breakfast.
I have a bad cold right now, and have completely lost my voice. My throat doesn't hurt, it's mainly just a cough and it settled in my vocal cords I suppose. I have never lost my voice before, and it is the most frustrating thing having nothing to contribute to conversations! I can't impose my opinions on my family (ok, so that's probably a humbling thing) and it sounds silly but having this happen made me realize how much I speak before thinking. Because I really can't communicate with anyone very well, and when I am , I'm only saying things that are absolutely necessary- so I'm not saying the first thing that comes to mind. Interesting experience, and I will hopefully remember this from now on and not always have something to say. :)

Happy Thanksgiving
I still remember the night I found out I would not be able to even apply to UCF's nursing program. I was so ready to get away, to go to a new place, to start a whole different life there. I had been accepted into the university, and had all my paperwork together to take down the next day to apply to the program, and had been looking forward to it for months. I happened to notice a certain CRN number on their requirements for chemistry, and it turned out that I had the wrong chemistry and wouldn't be able to even apply. I cried right then and there, and was mad at myself and upset with God. I felt like my chances of getting into UNF's program were completely impossible and basically felt like I had no other options. But little did I know, the last program I ever thought I'd make it into was the one God wanted me in, and it's just interesting to think that it turned out that way. I never even expected it. What made me mad ended up being the best thing for me. It's just pretty cool when you can look back on it- if only we could have that perspective when those things happen.
Well, I should be going to bed because it is off to an EARLY day to shop tomorrow! I have never shopped on Black Friday before so I'm looking forward to it! HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone and I hope that you can find something to be thankful for (and I'm sure you can find many things). Remember that no matter what, God remains faithful in all things even when we can't see it.

And tomorrow is Thanksgiving! I'm so ready for it. Just to have good quality time with family and friends- it has been a long time. I hung out last night with Tricia and Alex, and it was the first time in quite a while since I've been able to do that. It was relaxing just to sit and talk, and not think about stress. I know that I let myself get too stressed this semester- even after I promised myself I wouldn't let that happen. I guess you just don't know until you get there.
Monday, November 24, 2008
I have been listening to Christmas music every chance I get. It's nerdy but I love it and it takes me back to a less stressful time and that's nice occasionally. Y'know? Especially when life is so stressful and definitely anything but simple.
Two new engaged couples I know this weekend. I tell you, I bet I know about 12 people in the last year newly engaged/married, all my age. I'm not feeling sorry for myself at all, it's just weird to think we are getting old enough for that kind of thing. But I'm happy for anyone who starts a new life together! You know, sometimes I think I could be cut out for the single life. I mean, I really hope that's not the case, but if that's what God wants, I don't know, life doesn't have to be un-fulfilling that way. We'll see though. I can't wait to see what's in store for my life!
And, Thanksgiving is this week and I can't wait. I will make apple pie, watch the Thanksgiving Day parade, and not think about school.
Back to work, good night everybody!

I feel ashamed of myself for being ashamed of the gospel, embarrassed by it. Embarrassed to speak up for Christ, afraid of what others will think of me, afraid of looking foolish. I want to be like that man.

Just some random thoughts of mine
Speaking of which, I have a presentation on Monday morning in ethics on organ transplantation. I didn't really think there would be any ethical issues in that area, but there are actually quite a few. Hannah was especially nice to get one of her doctors to lend me a book on the ethical issues surrounding organ transplantation. I really appreciated that!
I'm feeling pretty good right now. I know the next three days are going to be stressful, but just knowing that Thanksgiving is coming right after that helps so much. I can get through it when I think of sitting at the Kerchers' eating a big Thanksgiving meal, sitting around a fire, talking and laughing, and watching a Christmas movie or two. I won't allow myself to think about any school that day. School will be off-limits! In a lot of ways I feel really at peace about school right now. I know that there is the possibility that I may not pass this semester. I can't ignore that fact, but at the same time I am not going to let that keep me from working hard and aiming for the best. I will work hard until 12 o'clock on December 12, and will not let myself fear failure. God is good and He has a plan. He knows what will happen, and I can rest in that. But again, I'll still work for the best because I will not fail this. ;)
Church tomorrow, and for the first time in several months I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't talked about it much on here, but my church, my church I have been going to for 18 plus years is going through a lot. We are without a pastor (interim pastor but still not the same) and things have just seemed... I don't know, just up in the air all the time. There doesn't seem to be any real leadership, not that the Session isn't doing a good job, but it's just really sad to me. I think my church has always been the "one thing" I could count on, and wrongfully so because it is not the people, but Christ, that we rally around. Anyway, it's just really hard for me sometimes because I have never known another church and have struggled with the idea of leaving to find a new one, yet still holding out for my church. Again, you know me, I hate change! Every time something changes I shake my fist at God. I really don't like it.
Well, time to stop procrastinating on this paper.

I am so looking forward to Thanksgiving break. Just to have a time to relax, bake with my mom and sisters, eat far more than any human should, have pumpkin pie with whipped cream on the top, fellowship with close friends and family, watch Christmas movies on tv, and be able to enjoy the little things amidst the stress. Somehow I have always loved Thanksgiving break, even with the studying and projects that are usually surrounding it.
I feel the end coming, but in a sense there is still that feeling of impending doom... as if I will work relentlessly until the end and still fall short. This is a very real possibility, yet I won't allow this to keep me from doing my best. God is good no matter what.
Brother Micah showed up on campus this week, preaching out on the green like he always does, cursing and condemning people to hell. I find this man to be an embarrassment to Christians, and I do not believe he is even truly saved. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, yet to him, in order to be saved one must be perfect and never sin again. Those who come forward to tell him they know Christ he only condemns. He actually claims to not have sinned in at least a few years. And people come out in droves just to stand there watching him, making fun of him, and he is not afraid to dish it right back. I actually might go eat my lunch and listen to him tomorrow, because while I am disgusted by him, I also find him pretty interesting. It forces me to look at myself and ask some questions- like why am I not actively witnessing to those about Christ. Why am I leaving it to the legalistic, grace-less "Christians?" By sitting silently am I as guilty as he, allowing Christ to be represented that way? Taking a look at the people Christ hung out with- thieves, adulterers, impulsive men, healing the demon-possessed, forgiving His children's sin... the ones He spoke against the most were the self-righteous Pharisees. And yet, I sometimes wonder if at times I even fall in the "self-righteous" category myself. Conviction.
And good night, because my thoughts are running a mile a minute and I need to get some sleep. No more disorganized thoughts for now.

This Week
I can hardly believe we have come this far in the semester. There was a time I never thought I would make it this far. Of course I don't speak too early, because I still don't know how things will go with the final, but I have learned so much! I'm so thankful to have this experience to LEARN. It's really hard at times but will be so worth it in the end. And honestly, it's worth it right now. Sometimes it stinks and I can't stand it but I do really enjoy it.
Not much else to say, my mind is tired so I think I'm going to call it a night. Good night!

I found this in a book called The People's Medical Adviser written by R.V. Pierce, M.D. in 1877, as an introduction to women's health. I almost laughed when I first read it. A far cry from today's perspective of women, and while some of it may be a bit extreme (perfection?), I find it interesting and at the same time sad that we as women have degraded ourselves to the point that many of us would probably be offended by a description such as this. It is almost laughable, isn't it, that there was a time when a man could write something like this? And most of all, in a medical advisory book? That we are prepared for our "high and holy mission," that is, motherhood? (and quite honestly I think that is a neat description for motherhood- something that was once revered and considered a calling rather than something to check off your list of life accomplishments) My favorite is that we are referred to as "the last and crowning handiwork of God." I guess that is a pretty neat thing to think about.
I just found this interesting and thought I would share it.

We didn't have clinical today due to Veteran's Day. Unfortunately that just means we have to make up for it next week so we get two days of clinical. I would much rather have gone in on a holiday, but I guess I was still able to enjoy this day as well. It is hard to believe though, that including this Saturday in critical care, I only have four days of clinical left! We will be done with it by Thanksgiving. I can't believe it. I feel like I should know so much more at this point. I know that they tell you the real experience comes after you graduate, but I still can't help but feel that way.
I went to Target today and was so excited to see all the Christmas stuff out! It makes me happy to walk around and look at Christmas lights, ornaments, and decorations. Such a happy time of year.

Just my thoughts
I decided today that at some point in the next ten years I'm going to go on a trek to study whales for a period of time. Can any average person on the street do that? I know you're thinking, extremely random, but I have always been extremely fascinated with whales and always wanted to do that. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Anyone want to join me?
I have begun listening to Christmas music. Early, as usual! :) I enjoy the Christmas season long before it ever begins. It's such an awesome time of the year! Some people are such a kill-joy about it but I just love it and enjoy every minute of it. This year, I resolve NOT to let myself get over-stressed with it. It's always to my dismay that I spend most of Thanksgiving break and a lot of the time leading up to Christmas studying for finals or working on papers. Hopefully this will be the last year I will have to do that. God knows. :)
I got to talk to the grad student at school the other day who is running the tutoring sessions. Usually we just discuss what we talked about in class that week, but I was there early and it was really encouraging to talk to her. She reassured me that nurses actually don't know everything (which is pretty much contrary to what I feel like our teachers communicate) and you really learn with experience. Nursing school is just the foundation for your career. I wish I understood that earlier!
Well, thoughts are getting random and I think it's time to go. Maybe I'll get some more of this paper done tonight? We'll see! In the meantime, I will enjoy this week and make sure it is a productive one! ;)

What a week
Well, this has been an ok week. Tuesday at clinical was really tough. My mind felt dull and I felt like I couldn't think for most of the day- not a good thing when critical thinking skills are supposed to be in high gear. I really need to work on getting a good night's sleep the night before, but that's so hard when I have to work on patient assignments. I'm going to have to figure something out.
I went to a day BSF class! It was so different than the night class. The group I'm in doesn't follow the guidelines like I'm used to people doing in the night class, and I found myself frustrated by that, but oh well. It was a good group, but I miss my old one. I will be ready to go back to the night class next semester, which I'm hoping will work out.
I spent most of today at the library with Bela. I got some productive studying done. I'm trying to work on this extra credit assignment, and I'm not sure where to get information on part of it. I should have done this earlier! Oh well. I still have tomorrow to finish it. It is just such busy work. But that's pretty much everything that we do! Gotta love it my friends!
I can't believe that it is a week into November. Time flies so quickly. I say that a lot, and I never cease to be amazed by it. And it just keeps going faster. I heard once that by the time you are 18 you have mentally lived half your life. In other words, the next 60 or 70 years will seem only as long as the first 18. Wonder if that's true? My grandpa tells me that he doesn't know where time went. He will be 91 soon! What a good man, I can't wait to see him next month! I have such an example in that man of all the hard work he has gone through in his life to provide for his family and pass on a legacy to his grandkids. He is the family patriarch, and we all love him so much. 91 years! I hope I live that long!
Well, time to get back to this paper. Good night! :)

Election Frustrations...
The election is two days away, and while I see little hope for the candidate I have chosen, I feel compelled to write.
I am seeing a shocking wave of liberalism sweeping over my own generation. My own friends, my own family, and my own brothers and sisters in Christ. This disturbs me. Am I one to believe that the Republican party is the “Christian” party? No. By no means do I believe that. Perhaps I have been raised somewhat in this mindset, but I have recently taken a good hard look at my own values and convictions, my own political beliefs, and cannot come to any other conclusion. Barack Obama is not the man to lead this country. He will be, by far, the most liberal President we have ever elected. No doubt in my mind.
What are the central issues, the core values of what is attracting people to vote for this man? Is it his charisma, his popularity, his good looks? Or is it his record, his values and beliefs, where he lines up on the issues?
And why am I casting my vote for John McCain? Because of his bravery, his experience, the fact that he is the “comfortable” candidate to go for (i.e. he is older, more wisdom, etc)? Or is it his beliefs, his values, and his record? Is he the perfect candidate? By no means. Do I vote for him simply because I was raised Evangelical and am a Christian, my parents have always voted conservatively, and Sean Hannity tells me to vote for him? No. What foolishness for a person to vote using that method.
But even more, what foolishness it would be for me to have evaluated my political beliefs using Scripture, and find them lined up with liberalism. My beef is not with high taxes so much as it is with welfare and socialized healthcare. It is not with a person choosing to live the lifestyle of homosexuality so much as it is with the government changing the definition of marriage.
A friend, recently appalled at my opposition to such accessible welfare, wondered how I could be against it. She told me that I do not understand what it is like to come from that, and sometimes for people it is easier to go on welfare than to try to strive to make ends meet and not have healthcare, etc. Though that seems like a good argument, I think it goes to the heart of the matter. That is exactly why I am against it. While I know that there are legit reasons for select people to receive help from the government, what motivation do many people have to work when they can just get hand-outs from the government? Look at the generation that came from the depression. They pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and many of them made something of themselves through hard work.
The government has gotten too big and if Barack Obama is elected, it will get even bigger. My line of work will become living hell if healthcare becomes socialized. I have yet to see an empty hospital bed, yet we think socializing medicine will work? Many healthcare workers are underpaid, yet once we hand medicine over to the government that problem will increase. You think there is a nursing shortage now? You ain’t seen nothing yet because that problem will get worse. Barack Obama had better have a plan for funding nursing and medical schools. And if so, that is more government than should ever be allowed into our lives.
And you think he is going to cut taxes across the board? Wait until he takes the Bush tax cuts away. They’re going to go up. And for the rich, they will go up even more. Spread the wealth, that’s the way to go! You won’t have to help the poor anymore! The government will do it for you- with your money!
And we all know how Barack Obama feels about abortion. I struggle with this one the most. How can we justify not protecting the lives of the innocent? Yes, I realize that nothing can be done to overturn Roe vs. Wade. I realize that the church has dropped the ball in helping these women who end up pregnant and wanting abortions. I also realize that people are able to make their own choices about what to do with their babies- I’ve heard every argument in the book as to why abortion shouldn’t be a central issue. Yet, we are still not protecting our most powerless citizens. We all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness- except for those parasitic fetuses feeding off of their mothers’ bodies (please excuse that wording… but I have heard it described that way by pro-abortionists). How in the world have we come to the point where a mother’s preference comes before her child’s life? How have we come to the point where we are willing to stand by and allow this holocaust to take place?
How have we come to the point where rights come before responsibility? I’m looking around at the selfishness within our society (myself included, honestly)- me first, my rights, it’s my life, it’s my choice, don’t step on my toes, live and let live, etc... Yet in the same breath many people turn around and demand that the government fix their problems when they suffer the consequences of those choices which we so often speak of. Oh, you’re pregnant? We’ll give you abortion on-demand. You have HIV after making a choice to have unprotected sex? Don’t worry, we’ve got doctors for that, we’ll cover the cost! Don’t worry if you don’t work hard, you can just go on welfare with the hard-earned money of your fellow Americans.
I just can’t believe we are coming to a point where people expect this from the government. I’m not pretending that the Republican party is a Christian party. I don’t fool myself into thinking that it will ever be that way. But my Christian worldview leads me away from liberalism and leans more towards conservativism. I can’t in good conscience allow myself to vote for a candidate who pushes for abortion, higher taxes, socialized healthcare, gay marriage, or allowing defeat of our troops, and an America where the new patriotism is liberalism. I just can’t bring myself to do it, no matter how popular, charismatic, or good-looking Barack Obama may be. Do I think he’s a likeable guy? Sure. I don’t think he’s the anti-Christ, or some evil person who is out to get me. I think that he sincerely is doing what he believes is right. But I can’t bring myself to vote for him because the things he stands for are so contrary to my beliefs as a Christian.
I hope that this is not an offensive post, but I have been really frustrated with this and wanted to get my thoughts out there. I know this is a ridiculously long post and I don’t blame you if you stopped at the first paragraph- I’d have done the same! I sure do know that God has a plan and I can rest in that. My mom pointed out to me today that sometimes God gives people exactly what they ask for, and that may be what we see happening. We ask for an easy, instant-gratification lifestyle, a give-me government, and that is what we’re going to get- and everything else that goes along with it. And so I ask you to think twice before you cast your vote this election. We are at a cross-road, and I think that whichever one we as a country choose, this time there is no going back.

This Week
This week has been ok. Monday night I was just feeling really anxious about changing to a new clinical instructor, being at a new hospital, and just the stress of school in general. But the day went really well (although it was pretty boring). Today I went to a homeless clinic downtown and basically took vitals for patients, checked blood sugars, that sort of thing. It was pretty slow.
Tomorrow is Halloween. I'll most likely just be going to the Reformation party with the family, which is fine with me! I find that after my crazy schedule I just can't do the whole "social" thing so much. The last thing I want to do is stay out late. I commented last week to Allison that we were both in bed by 11 o'clock last week, on a Friday night. We were exhausted!
Tomorrow I have a checkpoint in adult health. Not exactly looking forward to it, but what can you do? I have studied, and will study more tonight, so hopefully I will do better on it. We'll see. I'm still going to the tutoring session as well, because I will take any help that I can get! I will get through this!
Well, I need to eat some supper and try to get a little studying in.

unfailing love,

Show me the way I should go,

A Good Weekend
Friday night we really didn't do anything too much, since I couldn't get here until after 8 and we were both really tired out after the week. But yesterday we got pumpkins and drove around O-town for a while because we found rejection after rejection. We came back and went to a party for Allison's former RUF minister, which was pretty fun considering I didn't really know anybody outside of Allison and her roommate. Afterwards Allison and I came back and carved our pumpkins- and they look really good! We used the special designs that come with the kit, and it turned out really well. I will definitely post pictures at some point.
The tutoring session I went to on Friday was so helpful. I will definitely be going to that every week. It's nice to sit down and talk about what we did in class that day- which was heart failure. It's a grad student who is doing the tutoring, but she has been a nurse for 28 years so she is extremely knowledgeable. She was very understanding and patient when I needed more explaining. There was one other lady there as well, who is in the accelerated program, and I think I feel a little better now about my schedule after talking to her. They run the accelerated students into the ground.
And I'm starting to get a cold. Ick. I can't figure out where I caught it either. Anytime I'm out in public and people are coughing and sneezing all over the place I just want to smack them around and teach them how to cough into their hands, away from people! I honestly wonder if some people have no concept of that, y'know? Oh well. It stinks to go to clinical when you have a cold, but they make you anyway. Doesn't that seem kinda wrong, considering you could get an already sick patient sicker? I don't know, but I'm hoping this will pass soon.
We are about to go to church, and I will be going home this afternoon. The weekend is almost over but it's been a good one and I'm glad to have gotten away for a little bit. :)

Frustrations
Yes, I'm sitting here venting. Yes, I'm complaining just like I said I never would. I'm more stressed than I said I would allow myself to be. I just can't bottle it up anymore! Today I expressed that I just feel like giving up and quitting- and got incredulous looks from friends who couldn't believe I was saying it. Yes, I feel like quitting, but how I feel isn't going to translate into my actions- I'm going to keep at it and work even harder. Of course I'm not going to act on these feelings, but I can't ignore them either. I have to cry sometimes- do I always have to maintain the tough exterior that people expect? Do I always have to act like everything in life is peachy? If I express that I feel a certain way, don't sit there and give me advice or tell me my feelings are wrong. I'm not asking for advice, and I'm certainly not asking for you to tell me what I should do, or tell me that my feelings are not justified. So here you go, my frustrations coming out. Tomorrow will be a new day.
Needless to say, I'm glad that it's the weekend. I will be studying, but I won't have to deal with people, which is sometimes the most energy-draining and frustrating part of school and life in general.
Well, I'm sorry and if you are upset by my complaining you can completely disregard it. I just had to let it out, and now I'm going to go to a tutoring session to hopefully get some help with my studying. Toodles.

I had my overnight shift in the ER Friday night. Talk about tough! I woke up at 5 am on Friday morning and didn't go to sleep until 7 am the next day. I have never stayed up all night in my entire life, and am surprised I was even able to do it. I still haven't recovered from that though. It was a pretty busy night. I got to do a lot of skills (got lots of experience hanging IV's!). I also saw somebody die, which was sad for me. They were older and had lived life, but it still was just weird to watch someone die. It felt morbid to stand by and observe while a person is dying, even if all preventive measures were taken. That was definitely not my favorite part of the evening, not that any of it was great. I slept about five hours when I got home and then spent the rest of the day studying. I took another midterm today that I think I did pretty well on, and have hope now that this will be worth it.
And now I'm going to go take a nap.

whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life
of whom shall I be afraid?
. . . Though and army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.
. . . I am still confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the LORD."
-Psalm 27: 1, 3, 13, 14

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and
my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
He is my shield and the horn of
my salvation, my stronghold.
I call to the LORD who is worthy of
praise,
and I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around
me;
the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD;
I cried to my God for help.
From His temple He heard my voice;
my cry came before Him, into His ears."
-Psalm 18:1-6

Something last night a girl in my BSF group said is helping me so much. She is a doctor and one of the most brilliant people ever, and said that when she doesn't always feel like she knows much, she remembers that God is her competence. And I just think that is such an awesome thought! I'm taking care of people created in the image of God- He created them! He is my competence when I don't feel like I know anything. Just a neat thought.
Clinical today was pretty good. It was uneventful because I was in cardiac cath lab and wound care, so I didn't get to do anything interesting. We took pictures afterwards so I'll post some later on. I'm exhausted due to getting up early, but physically I don't feel too tired.
I'm trying not to stress too much about this midterm. God is in control, and I'm going to go in there and do my best (which I have to remember doesn't mean being the best) in reliance upon Him.

*SIGH* I'm just having a panic attack right now so don't mind me. It is frustrating to not know what is going to happen. Every semester I go through panic mode about this time, wondering if I'll pass, and then afterwards I wonder why I ever worried. I hope it's the same way with this one because I'm about to go crazy. This class isn't really a reflection of how much you know, but of how good your critical thinking skills are. That's the hardest part. What have you learned and now how are you going to apply it. Scary.
Well, instead of sitting here ranting and raving about this midterm I should probably go study for it. Please pray for me.

I finally got started on my homebase community hours today. We are working with kids at one of the community centers, doing fitness with them. It was a lot of fun, but very tiring. I'm getting old- I can hardly keep up with the kids anymore! We tried the Indian run at first, and that ended up being a disaster with 20 kids of all ages. So we did relays for awhile and did a good bit of stretching. I'm bringing a whistle next time because it was impossible to talk over all the kids.
I am so tired right now. Those kids wore me out more than any 12 hour clinical does! :) It was fun though. They were so excited to see us when we got there. A couple times they had me doubled over in laughter. Always a good break from school.
Midterms are coming up, and I don't feel ready. I spent so much time studying for the checkpoint this week, and it still didn't pay off. How am I going to pass the midterm? I don't know what I will do if I don't pass. Please pray for me if you think about it, that I will apply myself and learn what I'm supposed to.
I'm starting to get excited about the fall/holliday season coming up. I love this time of year. I'm going to try to enjoy it regardless of the stress I'm going through. You know, if I wasn't stressed about school, it would be something else. So I'm trying to enjoy the little things I can even amidst the craziness. It's the only way to stay sane. Maybe in two weeks I'll get a pumpkin and carve it. And I'm going to start thinking about a Halloween costume too. ;) If I get through these midterms, there will be fun times ahead!

thoughts of a nursing student
In some ways, this semester I have felt so disillusioned by nursing and the medical field in general. I see nurses who are over-worked and stressed, who are under-appreciated and even some who can't take the time to do so many of the things that a nurse should do. I see some that don't love what they do. I see doctors who don't seem to really care about their patients, who strut around telling nurses what to do, and treat patients like projects rather than people. That's not to say that they are all like that, or even a majority of them like that (really, it is a small majority but they seem to stand out the most), but it is so frustrating when a doctor walks into a room, doesn't know a patient's name, and leaves less than five minutes later. While I highly respect doctors and realize that their jobs are even crazier than nurses', it still frustrates me to no end that some of them can't take the little extra effort to treat patients like people.
I hope that when I graduate and start my career, I don't lose sight of why I'm doing this. I don't want to treat patients like they are nothing but their diagnosis. I want to know them, to advocate for them, make them feel as comfortable as possible, to help give them the best quality of life possible for them. Yet I feel as if this is impossible, because people tell me you become jaded when you get out into the field. I don't want that to happen, and how can I prevent it? I have come to see why some nurses don't last very long.
I have seen some nurses who love what they do, who love their patients, and love to share their knowledge. These are the nurses that I want to be like. And I have to note that I have seen a lot of great doctors as well, and can't praise what they do enough. I don't want to convey a dislike of doctors, because I have always respected them. I just understand now why there is such a shortage of nurses.
I'm tired. I'm going to eat supper and watch the debate. And I will sleep well tonight. I'm loving what I'm doing. It will be a great career!

Rambling
Lately I have begun to feel like I'm really staring to get this stuff. Not completely, and I suppose that I'll never arrive there (who ever does?), but I just feel like things are starting to click. Especially meds. When we took patho/pharm last semester, half the time I felt like things were going over my head and I wasn't getting it. Now I realize that class was the foundation I needed, because I'm actually drawing from what I learned, and remembering more and more as I see different patients, or study for adult health. I see diagnoses and what meds they are on and a little lightbulb appears over my head. :) Assessing patients is still a little shaky, but that's why they still have us in school now, isn't it? I'm learning. Praise God, I'm learning!
I will be glad October 20th is here. After that, all of my midterms will be over and I will be well into the second half. I just pray that I pass. People always say, "Failing is never an option!" Well it's not an option but it sure is a possibility. You just have to face reality. Although I know that God has a plan and nothing I do will thwart it, that doesn't take away the personal responsibility of working hard and doing my best, as to the LORD. I think that sometimes as Christians we sort of have the "let go and let God" (I've never really understood what that means) mentality and don't want to take personal responsibility. We use God's sovereignty as an excuse to be lazy. Wow, that sounds horrible even to write it out but I think that I do it all the time. I say, God has a plan and even if I do this or don't do that, it'll happen anyway. I don't want to take responsibility. I do that all the time.
Do I work hard because I want to get good grades? Or do I work hard because I want to glorify God? I have to ask myself those questions. And when I'm slacking off and not doing my best (which happens more often than I'd like to admit), it is simply because I'm lazy, I am not working to glorify God, and I'm selfish.
The weather has been simply glorious the past two weeks- I have woken up to temperatures in the low 60's (even hit 59 Friday morning!) and the day never gets much above the 70's. I have never seen this in September/October. Maybe it's global warming.
Thursday, October 2, 2008
Yesterday I again spent the day feeling under the weather. Not as bad as last week, but I just felt headachy and lethargic most of the day. I ended up taking a three hour nap. For some reason clinical just wipes me out! I can't figure it out. I did get something productive done, but not nearly what I should have. I was never affected like this last semester after 12-hour days (although last year they were never as intense as they are now). I guess I just need to make sure I am getting more work done Thursday through Monday because it looks like Wednesdays are going to be pretty much shot from here on out unless something changes.
I'm at the library right now to make up for lost time yesterday. Although I'm having a hard time concentrating, I do feel that I've gotten some productive studying done. It is just getting to the point where it is not productive and the information is not being retained. Part of my problem is I'm hungry. Not a fun way to spend the day. I will probably leave in about an hour or so.
I'll be going to Amanda's spinning class again tomorrow. I did it last week and it was pretty good. A hard work-out, and something I definitely need! She does it three days a week but I can only make it out on Fridays after class. I should try to exercise at least two other days on my own. Maybe that will help me feel less tired a lot of the time. Well, that and actually getting a good night's sleep.
I can't wait to graduate. I was looking online last night for places to live after I'm done. Looks like St. Louis is the place, but really anywhere in the NORTH would be great. I'm tired of hot and humid weather 90% of the year. You can tell me that St. Louis gets super hot and humid weather and I won't argue that, but they do not get it March through October with hot days sprinkled in throughout the winter months as well. We do and it is absolutely miserable. You wake up and step outside in the morning and immediately start sweating, can hear your hair frizz, cut the air with a knife and know that it is only going to get worse as the day progresses. Welcome to Florida.

A Good Day
Tuesdays after clinicals are my time to lay low and relax. After going all day, I have got to unwind and have time to relax. Of course midterms and finals weeks are a different story, but for tonight I am going to take it easy.
I can't believe that midterms are in just two weeks. I will be half-way through the semester before I know it! I knew it would go this fast but it is still hard to believe.

I'm so struck by how impulsive and impatient Moses was! He killed an Egyptian- a sinful and evil act by itself, but he was doing that because he thought the Hebrews would see him as their rescuer, in essence, their "hero" (Acts 7:25). I have never seen it that way at all before.
Something else I read in Exodus 2:24 & 25. "God heard their groaning and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them." This is just my own commentary is likely not even right or anywhere close to accurate, but I wonder if God had turned His back on the Hebrews during the 400 year period that they were in slavery. Not completely turned His back no them, because He definitely kept His hand on them because the 400 years were part of His promise to Abraham in Genesis 15:13, so maybe it was more of a silence from God. I mean, they may have been groaning before that, (though it is not mentioned) but the Bible only mentions their cry going up to God at this point, after Moses has already left Egypt. Bear in mind that it is highly probable that many of the Hebrews were highly influenced by Egyptian culture and gods, and many likely worshiped those rather than God.
One thing I want to point out is that God remembered. He doesn't forget His promises to us! And Moses couldn't do a thing to change those plans. He tried to speed things up, and it almost backfired on him. God's plans were going to happen in His time, rather than in our instant-gratification human nature. I think that I'm just like Moses all the time, trying to be manipulative and speed things up. Interestingly enough, Exodus doesn't mention that the Israelites were praying for a deliverer before Moses' birth, or that Moses' parents knew that Moses would be a deliverer, and neither does God specify in what way He would bring about the deliverance in Genesis 15, (all contrary to what many romanticized versions of the story tell us). Somehow Moses either knew he would be, or maybe he only originally thought that he could be based upon his merit, the deliverer, and that is why he killed the Egyptian. Acts 7 does mention that he thought the Israelites would recognize him as their rescuer. I wonder if originally he thought that simply because he was a prince and a Hebrew, they would all see him as their deliverer? But perhaps not, because in Hebrews 11:24 it does say that when he grew up he refused to be known as the son of the Pharaoh's daughter and wanted to be mistreated along with his people. But we don't know at what point this happened either, just that it happened when he grew up.
Anyway, just some thoughts I had that were spurred by some of this week's questions that I felt like writing down. It is merely speculation, and nothing more. I'm not super knowledgeable about Scripture so I'm sure that there are points I'm missing. Any thoughts are welcome though. Sorry that it is completely unorganized.
Another week of school ahead of me. But I get to go to BSF tomorrow night and that is the highlight of my week!!!

Friday, Meds, and Survivor
I bought some med cards today. It has most of the mainstream meds that are used in medicine that I should know, and they are alphebatized and already typed out on cards. So if I need to bring stuff with me for quick reference such as at clinical, it will be so nice! I have got to learn my meds better. Today a couple people told me that they don't think it's all that important, but I think that since this is what I will (hopefully-if I pass) be doing for the rest of my life, I need to LEARN them!! I don't want to come out of school clueless about so much. I feel that way right now and I don't want that to continue. I want to apply myself better and not throw away what freedom I have to be able to do what I'm doing. So many people around the world would give anything to even have access to the kind of education I'm privileged to receive. I take it for granted all the time.
I watched Survivor last night. I swore I would never watch it again, and Melissa texted me to inform me that there were tons of hot guys and I should watch it, so I did... and I was hooked. I watched the whole two hours. What a complete waste of time, but it's so good. I used to be obsessed with Survivor when I was in eighth grade, and watched pretty much every season until 2005. Last year Melissa and I watched one together when she moved to St. Louis.
This week went by fast again- five weeks down and 10 to go!! Yeah! It's going fast. I can't believe October is almost here. I don't know if I want it to go so fast, but yet because it's so stressful I'm kind of glad it is. Life is passing me by and I don't even know it.

Stress, School, and God's faithfulness
It's days like this that I wonder why I ever signed up for this. Of course, yesterday I was thinking how glad I am that I'm doing this. It just depends on the day I guess. Sometimes it's frustrating because I feel so stupid half the time. I was talking to Allison about it last night, and I find that I expect that I should know everything even though that's not possible. Sometimes teachers make you feel stupid because you don't know all your meds, and I'm thinking really? Cause there are thousands of them out there. I'm just trying to learn all I can right now, and the rest will come with experience. That's what everyone tells me. But it doesn't stop me from beating myself up for not knowing everything. And I know I can't ever know everything! I think that I always saw myself at this point-being a senior in nursing school- and knowing everything. Seriously, my expectations were way too high for myself. I think because when I would talk to Hannah or Amanda they always seemed so smart like they knew everything, but now I know that is probably because I didn't know anything and at that point they knew a lot more than I did.
BSF this week was really good. I was so blessed at the beginning. On the way over to pick Hannah up, I was thinking about how stressed I was and my attitude was horrible (kind of like it is right now) and one of the things I like to do is sing some of my favorite hymns. The two that I sang on the way over were Praise to the Lord the Almighty and How Firm a Foundation. I was frustrated because I couldn't remember all the words. Well, when we got to BSF, the two opening hymns Lisa picked were BOTH of those!! I was just so blessed by that. God knew what I needed, just as He always does. And no, the rest of my week has not gone perfectly, but I can hold onto moments like that and remember God's faithfulness even in the "small" things (in no way are they really small though!). In fact, even now I know that today I already forgot how God has blessed me this week. How quickly I forget His faithfulness.
Well, it is time for me to try to get some studying in today. I hope it will be productive! Bye bye!

Just a break from school...
I have been drinking more coffee than any human being should be allowed. Fun fun! Just think, some day I will look back on all this and be glad I got through it. I'm stressed and have way too much to do, but gotta remember Christ is enough. Life can't always be easy and He is GOOD.
The reason I emphasize that is that I recently became convicted about how I use the phrase "God is good." While there is nothing wrong with that phrase, I have noticed that the times that I use it are when something good happens, such as getting paid early for something when I really needed the money most, making a good grade on a test, etc... I realize that is an over-used phrase by me. It may not sound like such a big deal, until I ask myself that by saying that God is good in a "good" situation, am I implying that He would not be good if I were to be late on a bill because the money didn't come through, or if I get a 64 on that quiz, etc...? Does it really glorify God when I say that, because honestly I'm really saying more that the money I got is good, or the grade I got is good and so on and so forth. That's not Christ-glorifying. Since pretty much everything seems crappy right now, I'm trying to always tell myself God is GOOD because I tend to only tell myself that when good things happen.
A John Piper video that Melissa posted on her facebook really is what convicted me. He says on it that you never will hear anyone say that Christ is enough because they drive a BMW. Catch my drift? I will post it on here sometime.
Totally disorganized thoughts, sorry if they're confusing but there they are. A result of too much writing my paper for school I suppose. :)

Another Week...
I don't know if I ever mentioned that I put in my two weeks notice at Hallmark. I put it in last week, and was scheduled to still work yesterday and this coming Wednesday. She called and said that she found someone to cover. I was somewhat relieved/disappointed. I was looking forward to those two days of work, but at the same time yesterday I was able to take a nap and Wednesday I will be able to work on this paper and study. I wish I could keep working there, but the more I went in, the more I felt stressed and while I was there all I could think about was the studying I could be doing, or how much work I had to do when I got home, etc.
Tricia and Alex's baby, Aidan, turned one this week! Tricia is throwing a party for him today and invited me. I told my mom that this is my first friend's kid's party- a very momentous occasion. ;) I used to look at pictures from my oldest sister's first birthday party, and would laugh at how all the adults were in party hats and not even Melissa is. Now I'm the "adult" at the party. When did that happen?! :)
I'm starting to wonder if I can do this anymore. I've been having so many doubts this week about my ability to do this- am I really smart enough for it? Do I have what it takes? Is all this stress and work really worth it? Right now it feels like it won't be worth it. I have too much to do, I'm not getting enough sleep, and half the time I feel like my head is spinning. Eleven weeks to go until Christmas break. Not that I'm counting.

Back in '92...

Ok so I had to jump on the band wagon and yearbook myself. This one made me laugh the most so here it is. I look a lot like my mom cause she used to have hair almost exactly like this! :)
I'm so glad it's Friday. Even though I have a lot of studying to do this weekend, I'm glad I can at least get some sleep. I didn't go to bed until midnight last night and woke up 4:45 this morning. Still almost five hours of sleep, but after doing that almost the whole week it does wear on you. I'll get through the semester, and I will be so glad when I do! :) Sometimes I have to think ahead to next year, when I'm in my cap and gown, and that helps me get through.
We had our first check point in adult health this morning. We have to go in at 7:30 before class to take them (they're only every other week) and I didn't do too hot. They tell us though not to expect to do well. They really don't even expect you to pass. Part of the reason is, half the check point is from the lecture we'll be getting that day.
I worked tonight and now I don't have to work the weekend! Yay! I put in my two weeks notice yesterday. It is just going to be too much trying to drive out that way two days a week, setting aside that many hours that could be spent studying. I don't want to quit, but it's what I have to do. School is my priority right now.
Another one of my good friends recently got engaged. I'm done feeling sorry for myself being single- I mean, it doesn't get me anywhere. It's no use to wish for something I don't have. But I do still sometimes wonder, why is this not happening to me. I know I'm only 21 years old and I have PLENTY of time. It's not like my biological clock is ticking or anything. A friend of mine recently posted on her blog that what hurts the most is going unnoticed. And that's probably where it's at for me. I really wouldn't want to be engaged right now, but guys never seem to be interested in me. I wouldn't expect it that much either because my looks aren't exactly top notch, but am I that repulsive? Well, enough complaining for now. God has a plan. If He want me single for the rest of my life, then it's for His glory and He is good and He is ENOUGH.
Good bye! :) :)

Hannah just came home and told me I look like I've been crying. I'm so tired I guess that's why!
Well, I don't really have anything to say. Just wanted to give an update. My mind is too tired to think of anything interesting to say so good night!

The Library
I have missed the library. I didn't realize it. On the way here I was dreading coming in here, dreading the quiet, the lack of concentration that always shows up when I walk through the doors... but sitting here, reading, studying, writing... it's not so bad as I remember. It can be peaceful. I sit by the windows on the top floor and can look out at the construction going on (very peaceful I know), watch people walk to and from class, or just the changing patterns of clouds. People-watching is one of my favorite things. I like to imagine who they are, where they are coming from and where they are going. I love hearing the sound of keys tapping on laptops, the vigorous writing of pencils, or the turning of pages- which always reminds me I'm not the only one stuck in the library studying.
And yet believe me, within just a few weeks I will tire of this place. It doesn't take long, does it?
My meeting is in 45 minutes so I should get back to work. Happy day!
Wednesday, September 3, 2008
I was so tired last night. I went to bed at 9:30 and missed pretty much all of the RNC. I guess I could youtube it or something. I watched Fox News this morning to catch snippets of it, and now I wish I had watched it last night. Palin will be speaking tonight so I will make sure I don't miss it! I think she is such a great choice for McCain. I'm now more excited about voting than I was before!
Well I really need to start studying for the day. I've been having a hard time buckling down, so I might just spend the day at the library. We'll see.
Saturday, August 30, 2008
I worked today, and it was a nice day. We were putting out Christmas cards (isn't that crazy?!) and Halloween stuff. I don't know why the Christmas stuff is going out with Halloween stuff but oh well. Whatever floats your boat. It does get me excited about fall! I love fall- everything about it. And I love Christmas. Basically I love October through December. Even though that's when papers and finals tend to fall, it's still a great time of the year if you can overlook that. Mr. Kercher also came in today, and that made my day!
Well, I need to try to get some reading and studying done this evening, so I will be going.

More school....... :)
I worked today, and could definitely feel that I didn't have the usual energy. My boss even asked me if I was going to be able to keep up my work schedule. I hope so, but if I have to quit then I will, because school is my priority. The sad part is, I probably won't even be working that many hours weekly- but on top of a full-time school schedule it sure feels like a lot.
Oh! Have I mentioned that our new nursing building was finished? We are already having classes in there and it is so nice! It's not quite as big as I had envisioned it being, but one of the nicest things is that the teachers offices are all in the same part of the building. In the old building, they were on all different floors and you never quite knew where to find the right one. Not that I frequent the offices of the teachers- (I've never been one to be buddy-buddy with teachers) but it'll still be convenient when I need help.
Well, time to go back to reading. Just thought I'd put in a little update. After this week, life is about to get really crazy. Yay, bring it on!! :) :)
