Class yesterday was definitely overwhelming. But not quite as bad as I thought it would be, so all things considered I feel pretty good. Just a lot (a LOT) of studying to do. I need to get started on my ethics paper also but everybody checked out all the ethics books so I will probably have to wait. Which is frustrating because the teacher told people to only check out three at a time, and I saw people walking around with big piles of them. Oh, well. It's not due for more than a month but I really wanted to get a good head start before school goes crazy and my brain explodes. But I'll live.

I worked today, and it was a nice day. We were putting out Christmas cards (isn't that crazy?!) and Halloween stuff. I don't know why the Christmas stuff is going out with Halloween stuff but oh well. Whatever floats your boat. It does get me excited about fall! I love fall- everything about it. And I love Christmas. Basically I love October through December. Even though that's when papers and finals tend to fall, it's still a great time of the year if you can overlook that. Mr. Kercher also came in today, and that made my day!

Well, I need to try to get some reading and studying done this evening, so I will be going.

More school....... :)

Not even finished with the first week, and I'm starting to feel just a bit overwhelmed. But I'm not going to let that happen- I'm going to do my best. I have so much reading to do tonight before class in the morning. I have heard some stories about this teacher. If you aren't prepared then you will probably be humiliated in front of the class. Although I don't know if she'll be like that on the first day or not. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I worked today, and could definitely feel that I didn't have the usual energy. My boss even asked me if I was going to be able to keep up my work schedule. I hope so, but if I have to quit then I will, because school is my priority. The sad part is, I probably won't even be working that many hours weekly- but on top of a full-time school schedule it sure feels like a lot.

Oh! Have I mentioned that our new nursing building was finished? We are already having classes in there and it is so nice! It's not quite as big as I had envisioned it being, but one of the nicest things is that the teachers offices are all in the same part of the building. In the old building, they were on all different floors and you never quite knew where to find the right one. Not that I frequent the offices of the teachers- (I've never been one to be buddy-buddy with teachers) but it'll still be convenient when I need help.

Well, time to go back to reading. Just thought I'd put in a little update. After this week, life is about to get really crazy. Yay, bring it on!! :) :)

The Beginning

So far, so good. Classes went well yesterday. Nothing too terribly exciting. They will be the easier classes. Adult health is the one to worry about- that lecture isn't until Friday so I think that will be when I feel truly overwhelmed. There is a lot to do this semester. I had clinical orientation today at the hospital, and that went well. The first two hours was just a bunch of boring stuff we are required to know, and then we got a tour of the hospital. I know I will get lost when I go in, I know it! Next week I get to do the whole day in the OR- I'm so excited!!! I think that will be my favorite day- and I will find out just how squeamish I might be. So far I haven't been, but I haven't seen anything really super disgusting- although I honestly think that the smells are the hardest thing to handle.

I took my medication dose calculation test yesterday and passed. If you don't pass (passing for this test is a 95 or above) by the second opportunity, you will be forced to withdraw from the program. Yesterday was my first try, and when I finished it said I got a 90 out of 100. I just felt sick and wanted to cry, so I went upstairs to go over it with my teacher. When she looked it up, it turned out that the computer made the mistake. Talk about relief! Even though I knew I had one more chance, all I could think was that I could do the same thing again and then have to withdraw. I was already going through all that in my head, and thankfully my teacher was there so we could look at it right away. Otherwise I would have been sick over it all day. After that, there was a nurse practitioner student who had to do a head-to-toe physical assessment walk-through, and so I volunteered to be the patient. It ended up taking an hour, but I actually learned a lot from watching someone else do it. I will be doing a lot of that this semester.

Whew! Day 2 and already I'm exhausted. I had a lot of coffee today, ha! I don't have class until Friday morning now, which is nice. Wednesdays and Thursdays will probably be when I do most of my community work. Ahh, well from now on probably this blog will be filled with stuff about school- because that is now my entire life. And I love it, I really do! We'll see if I'm saying that a month from now.

One year ago, I was just starting in the program. I was scared, and nervous, afraid I wouldn't even make it through the first semester. I felt like I knew nothing, and the next two years seemed insurmountable. I can't believe it has been a whole year. Honestly, I still feel like a newbie, I don't feel like I know as much as I thought I would by this time, but hopefully I will be able to have better recall than I think. This is supposed to be the hardest semester of all, and I hope I make it through. Yes, there is that fear of failing. I hate it, but I'm going to work hard and trust God.

I feel like I have written a novel here so I'm going to be going now. I'm going to take a nap, and try to get some reading done.

My Aunt

Tomorrow I will be waking up to my first day of classes. I have nursing ethics at 10 and nursing science II at 1:00. Mondays will not be be bad days.

I still can't believe the news about my aunt. My sisters have both written awesome tributes to her in their blogs, so I feel like I should say a few things also about the wonderful woman that Aunt Georgia is. It has been hard for me to talk about, but I feel as if I can't cry anymore for now. She is my grandma's sister, and one of the most amazing women ever. She is full of love, laughter, joy, and she loves the Lord. Even while she has been sick these past years, you could always count on laughter when she was around. When I was a little younger she had more energy and could keep up with the best of them. She loves the St. Louis Rams and Cardinals, and has always gone to games as long as I can remember. People have also always told me I look like her when she was young, and she told me that she always thought I was beautiful. She is my other grandma- she and my uncle treat all of their grand-nieces and nephews as if they were their own grandchildren. One of the things I remember as a little girl when we got to my grandparents every Christmas, we knew we would see Aunt Georgia and Uncle Dick at church the next day- and we would run and hug them as soon as we saw them, and sit in their pew during the service. She always wears a Christmas plaid jacket that time of year. What a wonderful, wonderful woman. I love her. She has so much strength and character.

It is time for sleep, and although not nearly enough has been said, or ever could be said, this will have to do for the time being. I feel less emotional about it now, but just a melancholic, sad feeling most of the time that I can't seem to shake.

And so good night, tomorrow I start my senior year. How does it go so fast.

School, Thoughts, and a Storm

School doesn't start for another two days, and already I am stressing about it. For no reason I am getting myself all worked up over this med dose calc test, and I know that I know this stuff. It's just knowing that if you don't pass on the 2nd opportunity you can't continue. God has brought me this far, and I'm not getting anything accomplished by worrying about it! I stress way too easily. I used to brag to people about how I didn't get stressed easily (really, I used to be so laid back about everything)- ha! Nursing school sure humbled me there. But I'm going to enjoy it while I'm in it. I have decided that no matter how stressed I get, no matter how much I want to cry and pull my hair out and drop out, I will try to enjoy school. Isn't that funny? Enjoy school? Well I have really enjoyed it so far, but I think I let myself get too stressed. Just talking about stress makes me stressed.

I have my orientation for clinical on Tuesday morning. I'm looking forward to that. It will just be sitting back and soaking it all in, I won't actually have to do anything yet. No patient contact at that point. Tuesdays will be my stress days this year. Clinical 6:45 until 7:00. Then home to study.

The library will once again become my new home, coffee my best friend. :)

We have all been doing ok with the news about Aunt Georgia. At this point I think we all feel like it's not really happening because we are not there. That's what is so hard to accept, because the last time I saw her (which was Christmas) she was fine. I wasn't even aware of her most reason health complications, so I was pretty blind-sided. I talked to my grandma (her sister) two nights ago and it made me cry. I will call Aunt G this week but right now I can't because I will just cry and cry on the phone and I can't do that. I sent her a letter in the mail today, and she should get that on Tuesday.

Well, the tropical storm has come and gone. It was a pretty mild storm, and thankfully we didn't get any damage. I did get out of work on Thursday which was pretty cool. What's the point of being open during a big storm? I also got canceled on two babysitting jobs which I was disappointed about because I really need the money. Oh well. Yesterday I went to Mellow Mushroom with Sara, Lauren, Hannah, and Catherine, and that was probably the stupidest thing ever for me to do. The weather was awful, and come to find out we were only a couple miles from a tornado. Great.

Not much other news really. School is forefront on my mind, and it's time to get back to studying my calculations!

:(

Last night I found out that my great Aunt Georgia's cancer is terminal. I can't believe this. Last night all I could do was cry, and today I can't accept it. My aunt, who has been like another grandma to me. I just can't believe it. Because I can't be up there it seems even more unreal. Why didn't I go on the trip with the family this summer? I hate not being up there, not getting to see her.

I know I can't beat myself up over those things, but I just can't believe this. I love her so much. She has had so many problems for several years, but she always makes it through. It's got to be the same this time around too.

Last night I decided I never want to wish time away again. I'm always saying "I can't wait until summer," or Christmas, or spring break, or graduation, etc...etc... I've got to stop that and enjoy what I have right now, enjoy the people in my life.

Today I went to a review for med dose calc. I went to class before school even started! The life of a nursing student... :) We have to take a med dose calc test by the first Friday of the semester and pass with a 95 or better to continue the program. We only get two opportunities. This is the most nerve-racking part of nursing school, even more than tests and finals. There were 2nd and 4th semester people there as well, and it's always nice to see people from the other semesters.

I'm ready to start. I got to see a few of my friends, and it was so good to see them! I forgot just how much I missed them, and when we were together we were just talking and laughing like always. I love my friends at school. Before last year I really didn't have a lot of friends. Not that I'm complaining about that, because God has used that time in my life. I'm one of those people that is very content to sit at home and read a good book or watch a movie, before I'll go out with friends. That's just how I am. But nursing school brought us together all from different places and backgrounds, but working together towards the same goal- and I have formed relationships that I'm convinced will last a lifetime. When you go to class together. stress together, work on projects together, go to clinical at insane hours together, do community hours together, cry together, pray together, laugh together, and even sometimes just go to lunch together- you make the best friends ever. Even though everything is so hard and stressful, we do have some really fun times together that just can't be beat. I know this year will be so hard, but I'm ready to go back.

My Summer...

I worked at VBS, organizing teens. Every day I got to choose the runners to tell which teens won for the day, and on the closing night these three characters were in the video that the Titas and I made. It was hilarious, and so much fun!

The family was out of town so we got to spend the time with friends on the 4th. Here we are at the end of the day, with our party favors which consisted of sparklers, tattoos, glowsticks, and star sunglasses. We were very cool.

I turned 21 and had my first taste of alcohol- this martini was definitely better than the champagne. :)

I got to spend time relaxing with friends at the beach!

I went to the beach a lot. :)

Allison graduated in May. This was such a fun event, and was the first time we have all been together for awhile. It also helped me to see that there will be an end to all of what I'm going through right now.

I was thinking tonight how interesting it is how we carry irrational fears with us from our childhood. Tonight I was at work, and I was closing and getting ready to vacuum the store. I had already locked the door and I was standing unrolling the cord, just watching people walk by outside. All of a sudden, from around the corner comes a person dressed in a gorilla suit- masked and everything. I nearly jumped out of my skin. It was with a group of teenagers, and behind him was walking some guy dressed as some weird character I didn't recognize. Ok, so I jumped, yeah, big deal- as they walked by the front of our store, I squatted down on the floor and hid behind some shelves! I have no idea why- my heart was racing and I felt so scared of that gorilla costume. I felt pretty stupid afterwards, because the door was locked and everything.

I kinda felt like Toula from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when she always squats down to hide from the guy she likes. Only I was hiding because I was scared. Haha, I have no idea why either! I used to have nightmares about gorillas when I was little, because of a 3 Stooges episode I once watched with a gorilla in it.

The AC at work was broken today. It was sooo miserable! But I feel so spoiled. All I could do was complain because I had to spend five and a half hours with no AC- yet there are plenty of people around the world that can live without it. Anyway, both of us felt sick because of it, and I came home and my head has felt really heavy all night. Ick.

Well, hurricane season is in full swing now. We'll see how the next few days play out. Hopefully nothing too damaging.

Church today, and we had a congregational meeting to officially concur with the Session that Pastor Phil can leave. I actually had to leave early and didn't even get to finish the sermon, but my mom said it was really sad. Sometimes I still feel really upset about the whole thing. But Mr. Harper came into our SS class and announced that they would like a group of twenty-somethings to have some input with the search committee. I might like to do that, but we'll see. Everything seems completely up in the air right now.

We sang Be Thou My Vision in church and it nearly brought me to tears, as it often does when I hear it. That was one of my favorite songs my senior year of high school, when I was going through a difficult time with my faith. God has been really good to me these past several years (and why would I ever think He could be anything else?). I sometimes feel like He isn't doing anything in my life right now, but sometimes it's through silence that God speaks. Which, interestingly enough, was one of our topics in Sunday school this morning. I shall speak of that another time. For now, I need to go drink some water and try to relax a bit before bed.

Thursday, August 14, 2008

I have begun rearranging my room today, trying to make it more conducive to studying this semester. Hopefully it'll help. Sometimes a different set-up is helpful. I won't be able to drive over to the library on days off as much due to high gas prices. I had to take the bed apart to move it, and I didn't realize just how messy it would be under there! It was just a lot of papers and things like that that have accumulated over time. It was fun finding random things I'd forgotten about. I found old letters from friends, notes from BSF, and sermon notes from Pastor Phil. It was fun reading through things. I have a good friend who I have known since we were five years old, and when we were in first grade she moved away. To this day we still write letters, and I found a couple from a few years ago. A month or so ago, my boss commented on why we still sell stationary at Hallmark, and she wondered who even writes letters anymore. Well, I do!

Michael Phelps is amazing. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Men's gymnastics made me sad last night. :( It has made me sad the whole week, but oh well. I have always loved gymnastics the best. And we've always been the best, so it's not fun to be second or third best, y'know? Oh well, there is always the next Olympics! And we're kicking butt in swimming, my second favorite, so I can't complain. I'm having fun this year. I am not normally a sports fan at all, but I can't get enough of the Olympics.

Today was a relaxing day. I almost didn't work out, but decided I should. I just did the eliptical for an hour and not weights. I hate lifting weights, but I know it's good for you so I still do it a few days. I don't want to be a frail little old lady. It doesn't have to be that way! Hm, so I'm thinking about training for the Thanksgiving half marathon. Should I do it? I figure why not? That will help motivate me to still exercise even when school gets stressful. Maybe I should go ahead and register for it and then I'll have to train!

Well, I don't really have much to say, so I shall be going. It's been pretty uneventful around here, and I've been losing sleep. Bob Costis said to have a cup of coffee to stay up, and we did just that! So I'm awake right now. Last night I was up until 2:30. I'm lovin it!

And something funny is going on with the scoring for women's gymnastics. Hmm.

His Eyes

"Sometimes His eyes were gentle and filled with laughter
And sometimes they cried
Sometimes there was a fire of holy anger in Jesus’ eyes
But the eyes that saw hope in the hopeless,
That saw through the fall to the need
Are the same eyes that looked down from heaven
Into the deepest part of you and me

And His eyes are always upon us
His eyes never close in sleep
And no matter where you go,
You will always be in His eyes
In His eyes

Sometimes His voice comes calling
Like rolling thunder, like driving rain
Sometimes His voice is quiet,
We start to wonder if He knows our pain
But He who spoke peace to the water,
Cares more for our hearts than the waves
And the voice that once said, 'You’re forgiven,'
Still says, 'You’re forgiven,' today
Today

Sometimes I look above me and stars are shining
And I feel so small
How could the God of heaven and all creation
Know I’m here at all?
But then in the silence He whispers
“My child, I created you too
and you’re my most precious creation,
I even gave my Son for you”

And His eyes are always upon you
His eyes never close in sleep
And no matter where you go
You will always be in His eyes
No matter where you go
You will always be in His eyes

Sometimes His eyes were gentle and filled with laughter"

It was a relaxing day at the beach today. I didn't even get in the water. I just talked to people, played badminton, and had a good and relaxing time. My kind of day. I got to catch up with a few people I haven't talked to in quite a while and that was really nice! It's fun to sit with all of the moms that I have known since I was little.

I have been just loving the Olympics this year. The men's 400 meter relay was amazing last night! Michael Phelps is my new favorite! Well, he always has been but since the Hamm twins had to pull out he has been my favorite overall. I'm still very disappointed about them not being on the gymnastics team. But I've been loving the men's gymnastics anyway. The strength they have just fascinates me! I love love the Olympics.

John McCain's favorite tune was listed as "Dancing Queen." Is he serious? No way.

And men's gymnastics just started! Yeah!!!

God is GOOD

"Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. . . . The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken."
-Psalm 34:9,10,18, &19

We read Psalm 34 in church today. These verses really stood out to me. I have heard them before, read them before, and probably had the same exact thoughts on them before, but God definitely knew that I needed to hear them again today. And while I didn't have any amazing revelations about it, it was a wonderful encouragement.

I love verses 9 & 10, which say that those who fear Him lack nothing, and those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. So the things that I'm lacking right now... well, I suppose that God knows that they wouldn't be good for me right now. I'm struggling with contentment in my circumstances because I feel like God is withholding everything I want right now. I'm seeing things happening to my friends all around me that as a little girl I always dreamed would be happening to me right now. Just last night I was thinking about how I'm going to be a senior in college and I realized that as a young girl, even in high school, I imagined that I would be getting engaged my senior year, just like my mom did. And today I know I lack no good thing. So thankfully, God didn't just put that in the Bible and then stop there, but later in verses 18 & 19 we know that as a Christian we will still have troubles, even though we lack nothing. So although my life isn't perfect right now, I'm having struggles, I'm having my doubts about where my life will go, I lack no good thing. Praise God! It's easy to say that but to really believe it, that's the hard part. But I know it's true and I'm thankful.

Tonight Mrs. Sutton is having a going-away party for Brittany. She's going to Ukraine for at least a year. I think that is so cool! I hope that some day I'll get an opportunity like that. For now I know I'm where God wants me.

I'm going to the beach tomorrow! Yay!

And I'm loving the Olympics this year! I'm mostly keeping up with swimming, men's gymnstics, and beach volleyball. Although I'm watching everything I can. I just love it. It only comes around once every four years.
